AMSTERDAM

Amsterdam - Queer history tour

Informative and entertaining walk around the historic heart of Amsterdam. I'll tell you about local queer history from the late 16th century into modern times. You'll learn about how queerness was criminalized and pathologized by legal and medical authorities, see the first gay bar in Europe, hear about LGBT resistance during WW2, and more. You'll also be able to ask about current events and local attractions specific for you and your group, from regular club and bar nights to one-off special events.

I'm a scholar of history who likes to better understand how the past shapes our present, in hopes that this knowledge will help to better navigate the future. I hope that sharing my knowledge about the history of Amsterdam will help visitors leave with a deeper appreciation for what they see and experience here.

Amsterdam - Explore hidden streets

Title: Explore hidden streets with friends

Escape the crowds and explore tranquil places in a historic neighbourhood. See Amsterdam with the eyes of a local!
We will show you more than the usual: iconic buildings & hidden courtyards. While strolling through the maze of little streets we will tell you stories spanning the centuries from Rembrandt until today.

Starting in the center you will learn about the origins of Amsterdam. On our way to the local neighbourhood of Jordaan you will:
  • Discover more about the history of the canal belt & encounter magnificent buildings like the Royal Palace
  • Visit hidden courtyards that housed sailors` widows and elderly people on charity in 1650 – the first social housing projects in the world
  • Explore the distinct lay-out and see the difference that this neighbourhood shows compared to the canal belt
  • Find out why both locals & art community fought to preserve the special character of the area when investors and the city tried to remodel it in the 1970s

Let us show you our Jordaan: a living village inside the city
